Research seasonal natural dyeing on sustainable fabrics. Explore contemporary natural dye practise globally and links to ritual, medicine and folklore. Utilise plants from the Morley dye garden. Develop with support an individual project to showcase your design development.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Experiment with a summer seasonal natural dye and print palette on a range of fibres
  • Develop an individual project for a textile artwork, fashion application or interior design
  • Research, discuss and use sustainable fabrics
  • Complete a book of plant colour swatches with recipes and suppliers

Learn to extract colour from roots, leaves, bark, flowers and berries. Practice how to make mordants for different fabric types and how to extend a colour palette using modifiers. Create a bespoke record book of harmonious colours from nature. Harvest plants from the dye garden.

Learn to prepare a light sensitive blueprint solution and how to apply it to different surfaces effectively including paper and fabric.

SEASONAL NATURAL DYEING WINTER (W21TTSE04B)
Create a natural dye palette using plant extracts and seasonal foraging. Print with natural dye extracts and print with natural discharge methods to remove colour and create pattern. Experiment with a range of pattern and mark making techniques on various fabric bases such as fine woven wool, peace silk, organic cotton and linen. Explore current thinking around issues of sustainability in textiles.

Learn to prepare a light sensitive blueprint solution and how to apply it to different surfaces effectively including paper and fabric. Students develop and experiment with various techniques to make unique images using this historical process and learn to remove the blue colour from prints and make brown-toned images. The course also investigates current practice and artists using cyanotype or blueprinting.

Create textiles in a stimulating and supportive environment in a specialist textiles studio with a dye garden. Develop your own projects with a view to exhibiting and working to commission. Special attention will be given to sustainability, research, design, exhibitions and current textiles practice. A series of workshops, demonstrations and presentations will be offered to explore textile techniques. This course is suitable for those with an independent outlook and advanced textiles experience, such as a degree, or who have completed the Textiles Foundation course and want to further their practice. The group hold in year or end of year exhibitions and participate in other creative opportunities arising through collaborations with other visual departments at Morley and external partners. Entry is by informal interview in person or by phone/email, with a (digital) portfolio of recent work.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Develop your own historical and practical research for individual themes and ideas.
  • Investigate a range of print and dye processes.
  • Use a variety of constructed techniques and hand stitch.
  • Develop your own individual textile practice.
  • Explore sustainable principles to embed in your own studio practise

& THE COAT OF HOPES – A unique community coat made up of hundreds of patches sewn on by volunteers along it’s epic journey from the south coast to Glasgow to COP26. Stitched with messages, hopes, dreams and worn by children, footballers, musicians, artists, pilgrims, makers, mothers, fathers, delegates, ordinary everyday people, extraordinary everyday people. A powerful coat made by many for everyone. Contributed to by Molrey College textile students amongst a host of other individuals and communities along route.
