Learn to extract colour from roots, leaves, bark, flowers and berries. Practice how to make mordants for different fabric types and how to extend a colour palette using them as modifiers. Create a bespoke record book of harmonious colours from nature. Harvest plants from the Morley dye garden. Review natural dyeing, past and present through active learning, fabric samples, presentations, books, and digital resources. This course can be taken individually or sign up for each term: Seasonal Natural Dyeing : Winter, Spring and Summer to take you through the year.

Teaching is both on a group and individual basis with technical advice in a specialist studio with a dye garden on site. The tutor will give demonstrations, presentations and lead group discussions around the historical and contemporary use of natural dyeing. By the end of the course everyone will have a range of naturally dyed fabric swatches together with notes for techniques to give them confidence to try their own natural dyeing and printing projects.

5 + 12 September 2023 I Cyanotype on Paper and Fabric I Morley College

Learn to prepare a light sensitive blueprint solution and how to apply it to different surfaces effectively including paper and fabric. Develop and experiment with various techniques to make unique images using this historical process and learn to remove the blue colour from prints and make brown-toned images and explore kitchen chemistry. The course also investigates current practice and artists using cyanotype or blueprinting.

Research seasonal natural dyeing on sustainable fabrics. Explore contemporary natural dye practise globally and links to ritual, medicine and folklore. Utilise plants from the Morley dye garden. Develop with support an individual project to showcase your design development.

Grow and identify dye plants and utilise the Morley dye garden. Experiment with seasonal plant dyeing, contact printing, solar dyeing and eco printing. Create and test natural dye mordants on a variety of fabrics. Plan a dye garden design. Develop a beautiful book of samples and recipes.

Create a natural dye palette using plant extracts and seasonal foraging. Print with natural dye extracts and print discharge methods to remove colour and create pattern. Experiment with a range of pattern and mark making techniques on various fabric bases such as fine woven wool, peace silk and organic cotton and linen. Explore current thinking around issues of sustainability in textiles and current innovations including new fibre types.

Learn to mix natural dye print pastes and apply and fix design techniques to fabric swatches. Explore a range of processes using natural dye extracts, kitchen waste and colour modifiers to create pattern through stencils and polychromatics.
