A talk about the resurgence of interest in botanical colour and sustainability, connecting innovations past and present in this field.
In light of environmental concerns in the fashion and textiles industry an insight into a connected, imaginative and plant inspired future.
Mindfully connecting design activism, environmentalism and localism.
The talk aims to seed thoughts about these connections and look at trends in craft and creative businesses small and large scale looking to nature for inspiration.
Also highlighting some beautiful herbarium specimens of heritage dye plants collected by SLBI founder Allan Octavian Hume.

Madder Natural Dye Workshop at The South London Botanical Institute

Location: South London Botanical Institute Garden
Learn about the special qualities of the madder plant, see it growing in the SLBI garden.
Press a madder plant – Rubia tinctorum – in preparation for the specimen to be added to the herbarium collection at SLBI.
Prepare a dye bath and explore the many colours that can be produced from this root dye bath on a selection of small fabric swatches.
Create your own colour card and draw mindfully in the garden with ink made from madder.

This year long course covers everything you need to know about natural dyeing and printing. It is designed to deliver a comprehensive and detailed practical overview of contemporary practise. Explore sustainable textiles, current innovations, fibresheds and the circular economy. Design a dye garden and grow plants in and harvest colour from the Morley College dye garden. The course will generate a portfolio of samples, notes, skills and recipes to use in a variety of platforms and for further development. This course is run in 4 blocks as follows: VTX142A: Autumn 2020 , VTX142B: Winter 2021 , VTX218B: Spring 2021, VTX218C: Summer 2021, nesting within VTX218A Combined total 20 weeks
