Do you know where the words ‘heckler’, ‘spinster’ and ‘lingerie’ come from? Discover their origins and much more in this interactive talk exploring the social history of flax, an incredible fabric we rely on throughout our lives for its medicinal qualities as well as for the clothes we wear.

Zoë Burt is a textile artist and Kate Poland is the co-founder of Cordwainer’s Community Garden in Hackney. They both worked together on the Seeds of Fashion project and Grow a London Garment, in which they grew and produced a garment from start to finish.

Twine and Wine

Kate Poland and Zoë Burt give a brief talk about the history of flax and linen with the opportunity to spin fibres to create your own twine. Then decorate your own packet of seeds to take home using the cyanotype process.

A chance to learn how to develop a unique blueprint and browntone postcard to record plant specimens from the wonderful herbarium at The South London Botanical Institute using a historical form of botanical photography.
